연제: Why study relativistic heavy ion collisions? (Topics in high-energy nuclear physics)

초록 :

Physicists have known that atomic nuclei are made up of protons, and neutrons and in turn these nucleons are made up of quarks and gluon. Ordinary solids become liquid and then gas well before the temperature reaches 10,000 Kelvin. But what about atomic nuclei? Can we “melt” them?

Theoretical studies have shown that this would require temperature of at least two trillion Kelvin. This kind of environment only existed right after the Big-Bang. For more than 2 decades, one of the main research topics in high-energy nuclear physics has been to re-create this environment to “melt” nuclear matter to form Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) in relativistic heavy ion collisions, and study its properties with a variety of theoretical tools.

In this talk, I will review how relativistic heavy ion collision experiments and theories have evolved together through surprises and resolutions, focusing on the surprising effectiveness of QCD-based relativistic hydrodynamics.
